It was equally interesting to read about Syria. The author was there in 2013, when most war correspondents, military experts and Arabists preferred to write about the region from afar. It was dangerous to fly there. Damascus was under siege, and airplanes were making a huge detour. You could get shot by terrorists anywhere. Walking around the city is an adventure.
