The main limitations for laser air defense are weather conditions and the need for direct target visibility. But otherwise, there are a lot of advantages.
On a tactical level:
- Intercept in seconds
- Ready for the next target instantly.
- No noise, no flash.
- Absolute accuracy
- No consumables
On a strategic level:
- Defense against a "swarm" of drones not for millions, but for pennies
- Working on the spot, without logistics of shells
- Constant duty
- Integration into existing air defense systems
Israel has already shown how this works. The Magen Or system shoots down Hezbollah drones and missiles in real combat conditions. The 100 kW laser intercepts targets in 4-5 seconds. Israel's defense minister said, "This is a game changer."
The U.S., Germany and Britain are also developing their own laser systems. (DE M-SHORAD, SKY Warden, Dragonfire). But everything is still at the development stage. Russia's Peresvet laser system went on duty in 2018, but nothing more has been heard about it.
Ukraine claims to have tested the Trident laser system in practice. According to the developers' claims, it strikes drones and aerial bombs at 3 km, optics - at 10 km, airplanes - up to 5 km.
